With the picturesque landscapes that this beautiful island has to offer, playing golf in Sri Lanka would be a relaxing way to spend your time in the country. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, Sri Lanka has a number of golf courses to master – both challenging and countrified ones. Many international golf professionals have played at these grounds during international tournaments hosted in Sri Lanka; particularly the Sri Lankan Airlines Golf Classic which is hosted in Kandy ever year.

In this golf tour itinerary, we will be covering precisely four of the most popular and scenic golf courses in Sri Lanka.

Royal Colombo Golf Club

Golf was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1879, with the establishment of the Royal Colombo Golf Club. Following India’s Royal Calcutta Golf Club, the Royal Colombo Golf Club is the second oldest golf club outside of Britain and has gained the ‘Royal’ status in 1928 as a result of its long history.
Located in the heart of Colombo, the club also has a gym and a relaxing lounge, welcoming visitors to enjoy not just golf in a serene setting but also some peaceful company and a comfortable workout.
Focusing on golf, the course has 18 holes, 6,560 Yards Black Tees, 6,303 Yards White Tees and 5,186 Yards Ladies’ Tees. Apart from these, the club also has separate practice sections and an active ladies’ division which has participated and won several tournaments.

Victoria Golf and Country Resort

Stretching across 517 acres of greenery, this is another 18 hole golfing delight which is also one of the most popular golf courses across the world. The Victoria Golf Course is a challenging terrain even for the experienced players. The club recommends players to hire one ball spotter and one caddie for a better golfing experience here.

The Victoria Golf and Country Resort is located in the scenic town of Digana, Kandy. Visitors to this resort can indulge in several other recreational activities as well.

The academy wing of this resort arranges classes for beginners to learn the sport and also hosts many tournaments for seasoned players to participate in.

Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

If we are ranking the golf courses in Sri Lanka based on beauty, this one would easily be number one. Nuwara Eliya has always been classified as one of the most scenic locations in Sri Lanka and a golf course in this region is undoubtedly expected to be breathtakingly beautiful. Due to its beauty and the high demands of playing standards, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is a popular tourist attraction.

At an altitude of 6,000 feet, golf play on this 100 acre course is affected because the ball travels much faster and at an estimated 6% of accuracy. Visitors are always welcome to enjoy golf as well as drinks and food at the bar and restaurant. The club also has a separate ladies’ section.

Shangri La’s Hambantota Golf Resort and Spa

The latest addition to golf courses in Sri Lanka is the Golf and Country Club at the Shangri La Hotel in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. This one is set amidst spectacular views of coconut palm plantations, nature and wildlife and the gorgeous Indian Ocean along the southern coast of the island. A premier 18 hole golf course offering Championship Tees, Gentlemen Tees and Ladies’ Tees provides an incredible golfing experience to players.

After a game of golf, players and companions can relax and entertain themselves at the bar and indulge in recreational activities such as billiards and watching golf games on big screen.

An exceptional feature here is that you get to stay at the world renowned Shangri La chain of hotels that offers 5 star hospitality with plenty of facilities and delicious food indulgence.

4 nights, 5 days

Targeting an evening at each of the four golf courses discussed above, the duration of this tour would total to 4 nights, 5 days. Golf Protocols in Sri Lanka

If you are a golf professional, you probably don’t need to go through this golf etiquette. But for new golfers, it is a challenging task to get into the game of golf. There are a few important protocols that you should know about in advance in order to make your golf holiday in Sri Lanka a comfortable one.

  • Every golf course has its rules; it could be a dress code or simply to keep your cart on the path when instructed to do so. Respect these rules while playing.
  • Other golfers are on the course at all times. If you think your shot is heading their way, yell “fore!”
  • When you leave, make sure the condition of the golf course is as good as it was before you began. Repair your ball marks, replace divots and rake bunkers.
  • Pace your play reasonably. A 9 hole game would take about 2 to 2 and a half hours. When it is your turn, be ready to go for it!
  • Remain quiet while another is preparing for their shot.
  • Order of play can be as discussed with your group – play by honors (based on scores) or play ready golf (whoever is ready to shoot).
  • The correct order to putt should follow this rule: if you are furthest from the hole, you will be the next person to play.
  • Before you hit every shot, make sure the ball you are aiming is actually yours.
  • Before leaving the course, make sure the flag is all the way in so that other players don’t have to hit a flag that is hardly standing straight.

  • The line of a player’s putt is the path that lies directly between the ball and the hole. Do not walk across this line.
  • Don’t hold up players. If a player wants to play just behind you and there is no one ahead of you, let them play through.
  • Throwing your clubs in response to bad shots is absolutely bad behavior, can be dangerous to others and can cost you for replacing the club.
  • Don’t walk away from the course until everyone has finished playing the round and moves toward the next hole.
  • Don’t stand in the way of someone’s shot at an angle where your shadow is distracting them.
  • Put your mobile phone on silent mode so that other players are not disturbed during play.
  • Don’t stand behind another play when they are hitting – it is considered bad manners.
  • Don’t spend more than 5 minutes looking for a missing ball – other groups are waiting to use the golf course.
  • Don’t be late for your tea time.
  • Don’t drive the golf cart in a wild manner.
