Location
Bentota, on the southwest coast, is renowned for its golden sandy beaches. It is a haven for watersports from jet skiing to windsurfing to snorkelling to diving. The Bentota River meanders through the town flanked by lush mangroves inhabited by birds, monkeys and crocodiles.
This stunning coastal belt is a sanctuary for sea turtles who come ashore to lay eggs. Hatcheries along the coast protect the hatchlings until they are strong enough to swim to the ocean.
