Wilpattu National Park Day Tour

Explore the largest National Park in Sri Lanka – Wilpattu. Bordering three cities (Mannar, Anuradhapura and Puttalam), the park is about 130,000 hectares in size and also features massive coastlines of Sri Lanka. Natural fresh water lakes known as ‘Villus’ are what the park highlights as these are breeding spots for animals to drink and bathe. Wilpattu is open from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. and is accessible by way of jeep safaris. February to October is the best time to visit the park but there is always a crowd throughout the year.
For your day tour of Wilpattu National Park, you will be taken on a jeep safari around the park to spot Sri Lanka’s wild animals such as elephants, jackal, sloth bear, leopard, wild buffalo, spotted deer, mongoose and many other species. An experienced driver cum guide will take you along the routes that offer highest probability of sighting these animals. The villus is what the park gets its name from and these are where most of the sightings are said to occur.

Places you will visit

Wilpattu National Park

The park is located on the west coast with closest accessibility from the city of Anuradhapura. In 1938, the park was declared a wildlife sanctuary with the natural freshwater lakes being home to many animal and bird species.
During the 30 year long civil war in the country, Wilpattu National Park remained closed and was re-opened for visitors in 2010. Since then it has been gradually gaining popularity as a spot on location to discover wildlife in South East Asia as well as an exciting spot for camping.
Your day tour jeep safari driver will explore the park with you and try to the best of his ability to show you as many animals of the wild as possible.

    Do's

  • Wear cool and comfortable clothes. A cap and shades are advised.
  • Keep your camera ready with the correct lens.
  • Keep your phones on silent mode and inside your bags so that they don’t disturb during sighting and they don’t fall off your pockets and into the jungle.

    Dont's

  • Do not litter in the park.
  • Do not use flashlight on your camera.
  • Do not try to feed the animals.
  • Do not smoke while touring the park.
  • Do not get out of the safari vehicle when inside the park premises.
  • Leopard sighting rates at Wilpattu are not as high as in Yala. So don’t be disappointed if you don’t get to see one.

How they experienced it

Me and my Fiancé went on a full day safari at Wilpattu National Park. We saw so many spotted deers, monkeys and peacocks, several wild boar and crocodiles, a couple of elephants and jackals, and a great variety of birds. Was indeed fortunate to see a leopard in the most beautiful national park we've been to. We felt like we were in Jungle Book, absolutely mesmerized by the scenery. This was the only safari experience where we were by ourselves in the wild, we only saw five other jeeps at meal breaks but quickly lost them. By the way be careful with monkeys whilst having your food at the breakfast/lunch area, they stole my sandwich !
