Mara / Keeriwalagama Primary School

Tucked away in the lush greenery of Deniyaya, about 170 kilometers from Colombo, lies Keeriwalagama Primary School – a small but spirited learning space in the Matara District of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province. Surrounded by the tranquility of nature, this school is more than just a place of learning; it’s a symbol of perseverance, hope, and the transformative power of education.

Established in 1965 with a single teacher who also served as the principal, the school had a long and challenging journey before becoming fully operational in 2017. Since then, it has blossomed into a vibrant learning hub, now home to 25 students and guided by 8 dedicated teachers under the leadership of Principal J. P. Wijesinghe.

Though modest in size, the school overflows with warmth, resilience, and an unshakeable commitment to growth. During our visit as part of the Blooming Smiles initiative, we were deeply moved by the enthusiasm of the children and the heartfelt dedication of the teaching staff. Despite the hurdles they’ve faced, including limited resources and a long period of inactivity, the school community has come together to build a nurturing environment where children can dream, learn, and grow.

The supplies we provided were received with joy and gratitude, not only by the students but also by the teachers who continue to play a vital role in shaping young minds. These seemingly small contributions can make a big difference, helping to create a space where students can thrive and teachers can continue their invaluable work with greater ease.
