The Wildlife Corridor of Life!

Blast from the Past!

The past of every single location or excursion in Sri Lanka is not that easy to apprehend, but through the years, people have been able to analyse and determine, at least to a certain extent, what has happened and how it happened.

Lunugamvehera was declared a National Park in 1995 with the idea of protecting the area of the Lunugamvehera Reservoir. Later on, the date of February 01st 2005 was used to open the park to the general public. The Inside Story!

24,000 hectares in size, Lunugamvehera National Park was built on the idea on protection of elephants migrating from Yala to Udawalawa National Park. It is home to large number of Wild Elephants & Buffaloes including other mammals such as fishing cat, grey mongoose, wild boar, spotted deer and mouse deer.

The Lunugamvehera National Park is one of the very few National Parks that are famous for being able to be visited on an all year around basis as it normally records a temperature of 30 degrees centigrade, and at the same time it is home to rain between November and January each year respectively.

Where it Stands!

The park is 261km southwest from Colombo, and is situated in Monaragala in the Uva Province. As of the moment, there are exactly two access points to the park where one of them is located on the Hambantota – Wellawaya Road, and the other is situated on Galge on Sella Kataragama – Buttala Road. In our personal opinion, we would say that the Sella Kataragama entrance is more suitable to access the Veheragala Reservoir.

When comparing the bustling nature of the Lunugamvehara National Park & The Yala National Park, the Lunugamvehera National Park would be victorious, but do keep in mind that this Park is also engorged with wildlife from all over.

Animal lovers, and wildlife enthusiasts, come one or come all, Lunugamvehera has it all for you, and no matter what time of the year that you are looking at visiting, the park is more than ready to welcome you into the arms of the true art of wildlife, and please, do let us know and we are more than ready to take you into the jungles of wildlife paradise:
