In a powerful endorsement of Sri Lanka’s strength and spirit, the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) shines a spotlight on the island nation’s remarkable comeback in the global tourism scene. Once tested by economic hardship and global travel disruptions, Sri Lanka has not only reopened its doors to the world but done so with authenticity and vibrancy that has captivated some of the world’s most respected travel journalists.
The 2025 BGTW Media Convention, hosted by Sri Lanka Tourism, was a breathtaking ten-day itinerary that unveiled a country rich in natural beauty, cultural depth and unyielding hospitality. Blue Lanka Tours was honoured with a token of appreciation for serving as the principal logistical partner for the event.
More About the Event
Sri Lanka Tourism hosted the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) Media Convention from May 13 to 23, 2025, aimed to enhance the country’s appeal to UK travellers. The event brought 34 accredited UK travel journalists to explore Sri Lanka’s diverse offerings through themes like Heritage and Culture, Adventure and Nature, and The Road Less Travelled.
For ten days, participants engaged in activities such as cave meditation, wildlife observation, and cultural experiences across various regions, showcasing the country’s commitment to sustainable and immersive tourism.
The convention concluded with a gala dinner at Cinnamon Life, fostering connections between the media and local tourism stakeholders. The visiting journalists expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s hospitality and diverse experiences, indicating plans to promote the destination’s multifaceted appeal to UK travellers.
Reasons for Resilience
From ancient temples and misty tea trails to wildlife safaris and village life, Sri Lanka has demonstrated not just its travel potential but its incredible capacity to recover, reimagine, and re-inspire.
This resilience is deeply rooted in Sri Lanka’s intrinsic strengths: its unparalleled natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and the warmth of its people. The serene beaches, lush tea country, ancient ruins, exotic wildlife and diverse spiritual traditions remain compelling offerings to travellers regardless of external circumstances.
Equally important is the unified effort from the government, private sector and local communities to restore and promote tourism during difficult times. Strategic marketing campaigns, infrastructure development and a shift towards sustainable and experience-driven travel have helped reposition the country as a safe, authentic and rewarding destination.
Ultimately, Sri Lanka’s tourism recovery story is a testament to its enduring appeal and the indomitable spirit of its people, who are turning challenges into opportunities and adversity into renewed promise.
Previous Recognition by BGTW
In November 2023, Sri Lanka achieved a significant milestone in its tourism sector by winning the prestigious British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) Tourism Award for the Best International Tourism Project in the Wider World category. The accolade went to the innovative Pekoe Trail, a 300 Km long-distance walking route traversing the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. This recognition not only highlights the country’s commitment to sustainable tourism but also underscores its appeal to international travellers seeking authentic and immersive experiences.
